THE WHOLENESS OF NATURE
Goethe's Way Toward a Science of Conscious Participation in Nature
Henri Bortoft
Lindisfarne Press, Random House, 1996
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After reading this book, the reader should understand Goethe's phenomenological approach to science.
Goethe's approach to science showed what today we would call phenomenological and Gestalt techniques. His distinctly psychological approach to science has something of value for scientists today, the promise of returning experience, synthesis, and appreciation of wholeness to the overly analytic way we approach all science.
Henri Bortoft has taught physics and philosophy of science for most of his career. His postgraduate research, which he did under David Bohm and Basil Hiley at Birbeck College, London, was on the problem of wholeness in quantum theory. His monograph for the Institute for Cultural Research, 'Goethe's Scientific Consciousness,' included in this volume, has been published in German translation. Bortoft now lectures and gives seminars on Goethean science, as well as on the development of modern scientific consciousness.
