THE VIRTUOUS THERAPIST
Ethical Practice of Counseling & Psychotherapy

Elliot D. Cohen & Gale Spieler Cohen
Brooks/Cole - Wadsworth, 1999

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The reader will learn a philosophical framework in Part 1 and work through cases in Part 2.

This book introduces a 'virtues' approach to ethics in relation to two other approaches: rule-based and care-based. It builds a theory of counseling virtues, and then uses the theory as a basis for analyzing cases. It considers the codes of ethics of the American Counseling Assocation, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Organization for Human Service Education, and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Elliot D. Cohen is a philosopher with training and clinical experience in counseling at Indian River Community College.

Gale Spieler Cohen is a counselor with a background in philosophy, also at Indian River Community College.
