SAY GOOD NIGHT TO INSOMNIA
Gregg D. Jacobs
Owl Books, 1998

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Readers will learn how to apply Jacobs' approach to insomnia treatment to appropriate patients.

Gregg Jacobs has applied Herbert Benson's Mind-Body techniques to the treatment of insomnia. The approach involves relaxation training, developing sleep-promoting habits; lifestyle changes; cognitive therapy for changing negative, stressful thoughts about sleep; techniques for stopping use of sleeping medications; and stress reduction. Clinical studies have shown that 75% of patients are able to resume normal sleep patterns and 90% are able to reduce or eliminate use of sleeping medications.

Gregg D. Jacobs, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a senior research scientist with the Mind/Body Institute of Harvard Medical School, and an insomnia specialist in the Sleep Disorders Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
