THE RACE FOR CONSCIOUSNESS
John Taylor
A Bradford Book, The MIT Press, 1999
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After reading this book, the reader will be familiar with the current theories on the nature of human consciousness.
John Taylor describes the range of current theories of human consciousness. He also describes his own theory, the relational theory of consciousness, according to which consciousness is created through the relations between brain states, especially those involving memories of personal experiences. As an ongoing and adaptive process, consciousness emerges from past brain activity. This highly subtle and delicate process of emergence leads to the complexity of consciousness. Taylor does not simply present his own theory of consciousness, but makes understandable the methodology behind the different approaches attempting to explain the problem of consciousness.
John G. Taylor is Emeritus Professor and Director, Centre for Neural Networks, Kings College, University of London, and Guest Scientist, Institute of Medicine, Research Centre, Juelich, Germany. He has published more than 400 papers in quantum field theory, elementary particle physics, string theory, neural networks, time series, pattern recognition, and cognitive neuroscience.
