HARM REDUCTION
Pragmatic Strategies for Managing High-Risk Behaviors
G. Alan Marlatt (Ed.)
Guilford Publications, 1998
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Readers of this book will be able to understand the principles of harm reduction, its relation to public policy, know some of its applications to addictive and high-risk sexual behaviors, matching strategies to diverse ethnic communities.
Harm reduction proposes meeting clients 'where they are at' to help them understand the risks involved in their behaviors and make appropriate decisions about their own treatment goals, rather than defining drug use as a disease or a moral failing.
G. Alan Marlatt, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Addictive Behaviors Research Center at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is a member of the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse and a recipient of the Jellinek Memorial Award. His research is supported by a Senior Scientist Award and a MERIT Award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He is co-editor (with Dennis M. Donovan) of ASSESSMENT OF ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS and (with Judith R. Gordon) RELAPSE PREVENTION, and a co-author of BRIEF ALCOHOL SCREENING AND INTERVENTION FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS.
