HANGING BY A TWIG
Understanding and Counseling Adults with Learning Disabilities and ADD
Carol Wren, with psychotherapeutic commentary by Jay Einhorn
W. W. Norton & Co., 2000
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After reading this book, the reader will be able to incorporate considerations of learning disabilities and ADD into assessment and intervention with adults.
Cognitive and emotional issues can interact in subtle ways and can affect the perception, communication, self-esteem, and personality development of clients with learning disabilities. These interactions have external consequences as well, including strained family relationships, poor work histories, and the inability to 'read' people and form friendships. LD and ADD can also prevent clients from participating meaningfully in talking therapy. Wren provides a framework that encourages the reader to listen for LD and ADD in adult clients.
Carol Wren, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the School of Education at DePaul University in Chicago. Jay Einhorn, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Evanston, Illinois, and Director of the Cove Center for Adults at the Cove School in Northbrook, Illinois.
