COUPLE THERAPY FOR ALCOHOLISM
A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Manual

Phylis J. Wakefield, Rebecca E. Williams, Elizabeth B. Yost, Kathleen M. Patterson
Guilford Publications, 1996

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The reader will be able to apply a 20-session model with five phases of treatment with simple skills, cognitive and behavioral coping strategies and drink/target behavior refusal training; and will learn to apply treatment with increasingly complex interactions and teaming up to reinforce each of the couple's positive behavior changes, including abstinence. The final phases of treatment introduce specific interventions to prevent relapse, establish nondrinking social support networks, and address other alcohol-related life problems, such as poor nutrition and lack of exercise.

Research in treatment of alcoholism has shown that involvement of a spouse or partner improves the outcome for the client. This guide presents a time-limited, cognitive-behavioral treatment in the context of couple therapy. This book demonstrates how to engage the alcoholic's partner as an active participant in the treatment process. Using this approach, the practitioner can respond to the needs of both the alcoholic and the partner, which may motivate the couple to remain in treatment and learn the skills they need to deal with the many struggles involved in a relationship affected by alcoholism.
