COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO INTERPERSONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY
Myrna M. Weissman, John C. Markowitz, & Gerald L. Klerman
Basic Books, 2000
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The reader will learn how to conduct interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for depression, how to adapt it to mood disorders, applications to substance use, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and other applications.
Interpersonal Psychotherapy, developed in the 1970s as a treatment for depression, has been expanded and modified for use in many applications. It is one of the few psychotherapies that has been shown to be more effective than a control psychotherapy. It has been shown to be ineffective for some conditions, demonstrating that the methods for evaluating it really work. This is the comprehensive guide for those who want to understand this approach, and the scientific research behind it.
Myrna M Weissman, Ph.D., one of the originators of IPT, is Professor of Psychiatry and Epidemiology at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health, and Director of the Division of Clinical and Genetic Epidemiology at the NY State Psychiatric Institute.
John C. Markowitz, M.D., was trained in IPT by Dr. Klerman and now conducts clinical research on the psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy of mood disorders. He is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College and Lecturer in Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons.
The late Gerald L. Klerman, M.D., was Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard School of Medicine and Cornell University Medical College. The lead author of Interpersonal Psychotherapy of Depression, he headed the Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration (ADAMHA) under President Carter.
